Astrid Klein

Astrid Klein is one of the most significant conceptual artists in Germany. Her work holds a particular importance for us. We deeply value both her artistic practice and her personal stance. Her works are defined by a strong intellectual precision, emotional intensity, and at the same time a clear, reduced aesthetic.

How, when, and why did the collaboration with Astrid Klein come about?

Astrid Klein’s work has accompanied me for quite some time. However, seeing her work ‚Mirror of nothingness‘ in Berlin was a decisive moment. In that instant, I knew I wanted to work with her — also because this very piece became the foundation for the first garment of the edition.

What fascinates me about her work is the clarity of her visual language — a reduction that nevertheless carries a strong presence. At the same time, there is a certain openness that leaves room for individual perception. Perhaps it was precisely this balance that sparked my desire to collaborate with her.

Through our exchange, I also became aware of how much her attitude, her experiences, and the consistency with which she has pursued her path over many years have sharpened my own perspective.

The collaboration with Astrid was marked by great precision. Many decisions emerged through close dialogue, often through very subtle adjustments that ultimately define the coherence of the entire piece. The extended stripe at the back of the neck is one such example — a restrained yet defining gesture. What defines this edition for me is exactly this focus on the essential.

At the core of Astrid Klein’s artistic practice lies collage. By combining found imagery with texts and quotations from philosophy, theory, and science, she questions established power structures and conventional modes of representation.

Her work spans photography, installations, painting, as well as neon and mirror pieces. Across all media, Astrid Klein creates an aesthetic and intellectual space for reflection, where poetry and critical analysis meet, placing the viewer at the center of the experience.

Astrid Klein is represented by Sprüth Magers.
